Description: A classic tragedy of good versus evil set in the 1930s Sweden, where Hoeglund, a local industrialist has made himself a fortune by the exploitation of others. The feeble-minded Sven is left alone in the world after his mother dies, but gets a job as a farm-hand at the Hoeglund's farm where he works without any pay and gets to sleep in the barn with the cows. Daily he witnesses Hoeglund's mistreatment of others, both workers and servants - and even his own family. Due to Sven's hare-lip he cannot speak correctly and has therefore a hard time communicating with others, but when he meets the disabled Anna his life takes another path.

Anna's family, the Andersons, welcomes Sven to their home and treat him like an equal. He quits the job at Hoeglund's and moves in with them. But Hoeglund, who ownes the land where the Andersons live, is determined to make their lives a living hell - and destroy Sven. But what nobody knows is that Sven, a devout Christian, believes he has been visited by three angels. In his dreams, the serphim urge him to take action and join them in heaven.

Considered by audience and critics alike - and even Ingmar Bergman himself - as one of the best Swedish movies in history, it remains today something of a cult-film. Skarsgard gives the performance of a lifetime, and the director Alfredsson, whose short story "An Evil Man" the movie is based on, gives an excellent and chilling performance as the evil Mr. Hoeglund.
